Testing for Anemia in Logan, UT

At Cache Valley Labs Direct, we are all about providing panels that will help our patients. Anemia is a very common blood disorder that can significantly affect our patients and it also comes in many subtypes from aplastic anemia to hemolytic and iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell, and pernicious anemia. These can all be indicative of a wide range of disorders. Common anemia symptoms include:
● Fatigue● Cold hands and feet● Shortness of breath● Lightheadedness, especially after standing● Muscle Weakness
Identifying anemia and its causes early on can prevent patients from suffering the physical harm that can come from chronically untreated anemia.

The Anemia Panel includes:

  • CBC w/ diff

A complete blood count (CBC) with a differential measures the different components of blood, including red blood cells (RBCs), platelets, and white blood cells (WBCs), including differentiating between different types of WBCs. A CBC blood test can help identify disorders of the blood, immune system, infections, and more.

  • Ferritin

Ferritin is a protein that carries iron in the bloodstream. Iron is an important mineral to produce hemoglobin--a protein that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen to the cells in the body--and myoglobin, which is a protein that carries oxygen to cells in the muscles. Ferritin levels help a doctor identify whether a patient’s iron levels are where they need to be.

  • Iron & TIBC

Testing iron levels can indicate how much iron a patient’s body has, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) indicates whether the body is seeking more or less iron than it currently has.

  • Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 plays a number of roles in the body, including the creation of healthy red blood cells. Testing for Vitamin B12 levels can indicate health issues like anemia.

  • Folate (Folic Acid)

Folate (also called Vitamin B9) is also essential to the creation of healthy red blood cells. Low levels can cause anemia, and high levels may indicate lower B12, which can also cause anemia.

  • Reticulocyte Count

Red blood cells (RBCs) are produced in the bone marrow. Reticulocytes are a term to describe young (RBCs) that have newly emerged from the bone marrow, and a reticulocyte count can indicate whether the bone marrow is functioning properly.
